In 2004, Aegis received significant exposure when it was awarded the prime security contract by the US Department of Defense to design the security and intelligence framework to allow reconstruction and nation building to function in Iraq, whilst keeping it de-conflicted from military operations.This contract, now at over $400m, was the largest ever contract awarded to a private company operating in this field. This is a complex, multi-faceted project which involves a security framework of Reconstruction Operations Centres throughout Iraq. Through these, Aegis maintains a situational awareness of logistical movement and reconstruction security operations, allows sharing of intelligence among security forces and reconstruction contractors, effects co-ordination and liaison between reconstruction and military activity and provides threat assessments and intelligence to contractors.
Aegis also supplies a static guard force to protect two locations in Baghdad and one in Talil, and a small close protection and vehicle escort capability to provide mobile security for journeys throughout Iraq to visit reconstruction projects. Additionally, Aegis provides a number of expatriate-led and Iraqi-manned Reconstruction Liaison Teams that routinely travel the length and breadth of the country to monitor the progress of reconstruction work subcontracted to Iraqi building companies.
